How the Jukebox, the “Spotify of its day”, Sparked a Revolution called “Rock and Roll” and Spun America Out of Control
St. Elmo’s Fire screenwriter Carl Kurlander recounts how his Grandpa Jack, a visionary pioneer in the jukebox industry, kickstarted the careers of stars like Frank Sinatra and Harry Belafonte and promoted the music of Black artists that radio stations wouldn’t play which first became known as “Rock and Roll” in Cleveland. As the jukebox becomes a symbol for the nation’s twin evils: juvenile delinquency and organized crime, Jack becomes a target of young prosector Robert F Kennedy as being a front for the mob.
